Sunday, July 4 was Growler Independence Day in New Albania, the very first day for craft beer carry-out sales from Indiana breweries. Bank Street Brewhouse opened for special holiday hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Progressive Pints, carry-out growlers (two regular-strength growlers for $17.76), the metro area's original Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar, and both Scotch Eggs and our famous Burnt Weenie Sandwiches. The Publican's final tally was 86 growlers of New Albanian's finest in six hours.

Leticia Bajuyo visited Bank Street Brewhouse today to provide a preview of her sculpture for the Bicentennial Art Project, and plenty of empty 12-ounce beer bottles were donated by our customers. Very shortly, the bottles will become the sculpture, and Leticia explained how and why in the context of her work to date.

Verily, man does not live by craft beer alone - even if I've tried for years to prove otherwise.

By virtue of its three-way license, NABC's gastronomical brewpub project is inclusive of spirits, and from the beginning we've elected to eschew the majority of mixed drinks in favor of selected distilled products served neat or on the rocks. There'll be an exception or two, and Sunday Bloody Sunday is the first. It is the brainchild of John Campbell and once we've done the necessary tasting SBS will remain a Sunday staple, with an everyday Bloody Mary recipe available during other times.

Author Douglas Wissing signed copies of his book on the craft of brewing in Indiana, 'Indiana, One Pint at a Time', in the Prost Room on Saturday, September 18, 2010. In honor of the occasion we served our version of the Brewers of Indiana Guild's current Replic-Ale which is based on a dark lager formula Wissing uncovered from the Harmonists of old, one brewed by them in the Southwestern Indiana community we now know as New Harmony.

I recently bought a fancy new Nikon that I obviously don't know how to use. I was going to publish photos of the brewery installation last night, but immediately noticed a blur in my vision and - without Hoptimus - knew it must be a case of bad photography. After some inner debate, I've decided to publish them anyway. Pretend you've had a pint or two of Hoptimus and you won't notice a thing.

Jared's C2 brew day report:

C2: Smoked Belgian Dark Strong Ale (to be aged in “to be announced” Indiana and Missouri wine barrels infused with smoked figs)

Yep.

The C-series resumed this past Monday at The New Albanian Brewing Company with the brewing of C2, and a monster of a Belgian beer was made for the little gnome yeast to devour.

Brewed in two batches over 15 hours, with a lunch break at La Rosita’s Grant Line location between shifts, of course, we had a fairly smooth and enjoyable brew day considering we brewed about as big as you can on this system.

Grassroots seems like an appropriate theme considering that I'm off to Madison, Indiana, to attend the Ohio River Valley Folk Festival this weekend. I would love to brag about the integrity of the event, their support of craft beer, local arts, and grassrooted, folk festivities, but I can't (See Roger's blog posts from last week for an in-depth explanation). Unfortunately, too many people have forgotten their roots in the race for success and supremacy. I can firmly state that we are not of that stock. We will always strive to learn, to improve, to grow, and to expand, but never by turning our backs on those who helped us, believed in us, and carried us along the way.

Yesterday was the occasion of NA 1 Night Stand, downtown New Albany's first ever "beer walk" - not to be associated with the annual autumn festival that always hates to have its name attached to such concepts. Rather, this one was the brainchild of Main Street resident Jala Miller, who put her formidable powers of marketing and social networking onto the task of filling downtown with people on an otherwise "normal" August evening.

To say it was a success is an understatement of epic dimension.

The fun started at 3:00 p.m., and the following photo shows the lamentable aftermath of Bank Street Brewhouse's first two red-clad, beer "walking," Bud Light-ordering customers, who couldn't bring themselves to finish their Kaisers, abruptly departing to drive off to continue their beer walk.

The New Albanians converge on Brendan's for a 4 course brunch paired with New Albanian Brewing Co. Beer.
